If you would like to learn more about how our family enjoys exploring U.S. geography with hands-on activities, check out our post below.
Geography has become a favorite in our homeschool. A few years ago we began working our way through the U.S. and then moved on to Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. Our family enjoys mapping and memorizing countries, states & capitals. But, what truly brings our geography studies to life is hands-on activities.
How We Do Geography
In our homeschool we like to take a two pronged approach to geography.
First, we work on learning the states, capitals, geographic features, and landmarks using Classical Conversations Foundations geography program supplemented by Where in the World program by Classical Exploration.
Second, we mix in living books, Little Passport kits, art projects, music, recipes, games & puzzles, and more. Depending on the continent, country, or region we’re studying, we sometimes use notebooking or lapbooking to tie it all together.
One of our favorite ways to explore geography with hands-on activities is family fun nights featuring the food, music, art and literature of a location together as a family. Sometimes we even throw in a Disney movie or virtual field trip from that region or state.
Here are some fun resources that we recommend to add elements of fun and creativity to your U.S. Geography studies.
